DIRECTED SEARCH WITH PHANTOM VACANCIES

چکیده
When vacancies are filled, the job ads often remain, creating phantom vacancies. Older listings more likely represent phantoms. We assume seekers direct their search based on listing age. Forming a match with an age-a vacancy creates probability β and generates externality affecting aged older. Thus, decreases match's Relative to efficient behavior, overapply younger listings. calibrate using U.S. data. The contribution of phantoms inefficiency is large, but, given existence, planner cannot improve much directed allocation.

1 Search , Applications and Vacancies
Over the last few years the efficiency of search equilibria has been examined by a number of authors. In a series of papers, Diamond (1981; 1982a; 1982b; 1984) has studied this issue in depth. Diamond (1981) shows that in a market with a distribution of match specific mobility costs, an unemployment insurance programme can improve the ex ante welfare of all workers by inducing each of them to f...

In this paper, we construct an equilibrium model of directed search in a large labor market in which unemployed workers make multiple job applications. Speci cally, we consider a matching process in which job seekers, observing the wages posted at all vacancies, send their applications to the vacancies that they nd most attractive. At the same time, each vacancy, when it chooses its wage posti...
متن کاملDirected search with multiple job applications
We develop an equilibrium directed search model of the labor market where workers can simultaneously apply for multiple jobs. Our main theoretical contribution is to integrate the portfolio choice problem faced by workers into an equilibrium framework. All equilibria of our model exhibit wage dispersion. Consistent with stylized facts, the density of wages is decreasing and higher wage firms re...
متن کاملDirected search with multi-vacancy firms
This paper studies how firm size, firm growth, and market structure affect matching between workers and firms, and resulting levels of employment, wages, and output. Building on the directed search literature, I construct and analyze a framework in which both the number of firms and the distribution of vacancies across firms are determined endogenously, wages play an allocative role in the matc...
